Abstract:

Due to the ever-increasing GHG emissions resulted from the overwhelming utilization of today’s Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) services, carbon footprint models are required for research on ICT energy efficiency and carbon reduction. In this article, we report our experiences in building and operating the GreenStar Network (GSN) testbed - a prototype of wide-area network of datacenters powered by renewable energy sources. This research covers fundamental aspects of green ICT, such as virtual infrastructure, unified management of compute, network, power and climate resources, smart power control as well as a carbon assessment protocol.
